As the last leaves fall and the chill of winter begins to embrace us all, the heart of the community remains vibrant and bustling, thanks to the much-anticipated return of the Winter Farmers' Market. We are moving indoors, offering a warm welcome to all at the Aviation Mall every Saturday from 9 AM to 12 PM.

New Season, New Venue

The Glens Falls Farmers' Market has always been a staple of local life, providing a space where the community can connect with the hands that feed it. With the winter season upon us, the market is transforming. Its new indoor location at the Aviation Mall ensures that the cold months will in no way hinder the town's access to fresh, local produce and artisanal goods.

A Bounty of Winter Delights

The Winter Market is not just a place to buy your groceries; it's an experience. From the moment you step inside, you are greeted by the vibrant colors of root vegetables, the rich greens of winter-hardy leafy crops, and the smell of freshly baked bread. It's a feast for the senses that defies the grey skies outside.

Support Local, Sustain Community

Shopping at the Winter Market is more than just a weekend errand; it's a commitment to supporting the local economy. Each purchase helps sustain a farmer through the cold months, keeps a baker's oven warm, and ensures that the crafters can continue to create. It's a cycle of support and sustenance that strengthens the community.

Glens Falls, NY – October 20, 2023 – Today, the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) will host a groundbreaking ceremony on the construction of the new "Market Center" project in downtown Glens Falls. The event is scheduled for 3:00PM at 57 South Street.

The board members of the Glens Falls Farmers Market recently learned of this groundbreaking event. It came as a surprise for the market members and the board, who did not receive information regarding the event and were not extended an invitation from the City of Glens Falls, the DRI, or Mayor Bill Collins. The DRI project has direct implications on the market itself as well as over the livelihoods of 60+ local small businesses and farms.

In 2016, the city obtained a state grant to construct a multi-purpose event venue for the Glens Falls Farmers Market. The existing market site at the South Street Pavilion is set to be transformed into a parking garage as part of this initiative. While the market was thrilled when the DRI project was first announced years ago, changes and delays to the new venue and its design have prompted considerable reservations among our board and members.

Despite the city portraying the new venue as progress, the Farmers Market board and its members view many aspects of this project as setbacks. The proposed space is notably smaller, reducing the market's current size and offering little to no room for future growth. Other issues include logistical hurdles with loading and unloading, traffic & parking, absence of heating within the facility while being advertised as year-round, and scheduled blackout dates that prevent vendors from operating due to concurrent city events. These, among many other issues, are what the Farmers Market board has attempted to discuss with city leaders.

It is disheartening to note that despite multiple interactions with Mayor Collins and the planning teams over the years, the concerns and aspirations of the Farmers Market community appear to have have been ignored and/or dismissed, all while the city is using the market itself as the sales pitch for the project.

In light of these developments, the Glens Falls Farmers Market Board is convening a meeting with its members to democratically decide the market's future course of action and the possibility of relocating our market to a new venue, in, or outside of Glens Falls.

The Glens Falls Farmers' Market has been a community staple for 47 years, beginning in 1973, offering a variety of fresh, locally sourced products including produce, dairy, meat, eggs, flowers, fish and unique crafts, all produced by extremely hardworking small businesses. Our mission is to support local farmers and artisans, while fostering a vibrant community hub where families, friends, and neighbors can gather and connect.

If you've ever visited us on a Saturday morning, you'd understand what this is all about; our community, and we think we embody everything Hometown USA is supposed to be.

We deeply hope that a solution can be found that respects the market's heritage and its potential to continue to flourish in Glens Falls for years to come.

Attention, Warren County residents and loyal customers of the Glens Falls farmers market! Every Saturday morning, from 8 a.m. to noon through October, you have a fantastic opportunity to make an eco-friendly move.

We're excited to announce the Zero Waste Warren County's new composting initiative! Now, you can drop by our dedicated Zero Waste booth at the farmers market, located at 19 South St., and leave your food scraps and waste. Think of those unused fruit and vegetable peels, stale bread slices, and untouched leftovers. However, a heads-up: we won't be accepting meat, fish, bones, dairy, liquids, or any cooking oils and grease.

We request that the food scraps you bring are clean of non-compostable items. That means no paper, plastics, cardboard, metal, glass, twist ties, rubber bands, or stickers. Why, you ask? Because a clean compost pile ensures quality, and several of our generous produce vendors at the market are volunteering to transport these food scraps to their farms for composting.

If you're wondering about the containers for transportation, you're free to bring your own reusable ones. Rest assured, a dedicated Zero Waste volunteer will be at hand to inspect the contents to make sure we maintain the integrity of our composting initiative.

Join hands with us in this green initiative and help Warren County tread a sustainable path. See you there!

Glens Falls Farmers Market: Seasonal Transition Ahead!

As the leaves begin to change and we start to feel the crisp chill of autumn, the Glens Falls Farmers Market is preparing for its seasonal shift. Each year, our community looks forward to this transition, not just as a mark of changing seasons, but as a continuation of the tradition of local shopping, community engagement, and supporting our farmers and artisans.

The Last Summer Hoorah

Mark your calendars! The last outdoor market for this season on South Street will be held on Saturday, October 28th, 2023. This day will be a culmination of the vibrant summer season, with farmers and vendors showcasing the last of the autumn harvest. Expect pumpkins, apples, hearty greens, and perhaps a few early winter squashes. It's also the perfect time to stock up on any summer favorites, from jams and jellies to handcrafted goods.

Welcoming the Winter Market

Just one week after our summer market farewell, we'll be moving to our cozy winter location. Starting Saturday, November 4th, 2023, the Glens Falls Farmers Market will be hosted indoors at the Aviation Mall's food court. Located at 578 Aviation Rd, Queensbury, NY 12804, the food court offers a spacious and warm environment for our vendors and patrons.

Transitioning to the Aviation Mall allows us to continue providing the community with fresh produce, artisan crafts, and specialty products throughout the colder months. Not only does it ensure that the community can access local products year-round, but it also supports our local farmers and craftsmen during a typically slower season.

What to Expect

The winter market, while a bit different from our outdoor summer setting, boasts its own unique charm. Here's what you can anticipate:

  1. Fresh Produce: Many farmers offer cold-weather crops like kale, Brussels sprouts, and root vegetables. Additionally, stored produce like onions, potatoes, and apples will be available.
  2. Specialty Items: From freshly baked bread to pickled goodies, the winter market is an opportunity for vendors to showcase their preserved and artisan products.
  3. Crafts and Gifts: As we approach the holiday season, our winter market will be a treasure trove of handcrafted gifts, from candles and soaps to knitwear and jewelry.
  4. Community Vibes: One of the hallmarks of the Glens Falls Farmers Market is the sense of community. The indoor setting offers a chance for patrons to linger, chat, and enjoy a warm beverage while shopping.

Join Us in the Transition

Whether you're a regular at our summer market or new to the Glens Falls Farmers Market experience, we invite you to join us in this seasonal transition. Embrace the change, support local, and immerse yourself in the rich offerings of our community.
